Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders

At Tesco Bank we work hard to play a positive role in the community.

Obree start line 2016

Every year we support local charities across our three sites – Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle. We continuously fundraise throughout the year to help raise as much as possible for each of these truly deserving causes.   In keeping with the banks’ promotion of Health and Wellbeing, we are a major partner in the Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders.

Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders is a closed road cycling sportive event, which sets off from Peebles in the Scottish Borders taking in some remote terrain, wild Borders landscapes and stunning views.  Over 2,000 riders incliuding Graeme "The Flying Scotsman" Obree took part in August 2016 on one of two routes; the "88 Challenge" or the "120 Challenge", both of which take in the beauty of Stobo, Tweedsmuir and St Mary's Loch as well as the legendary Talla Climb, a tough 20% gradient climb,  all on roads closed to all cars and other traffic. You can see how they go on here:

The course is challenging but organisers remain focussed on the mass-participation nature of the ride. It’s a great day out with some of the best climbs in the country, but it’s by no means a race or an event for just the fittest. All kinds of cyclists can enjoy superb, traffic-free riding in the company of a big, friendly group of like-minded riders.

Team with Obree

The weather was a bit unpredictable with sun and windy conditions but that didn’t stop participants from giving it their all and getting in the spirit. Graeme Obree set off with the first group to start the event but made his way back to speak to participants and offer words of encouragement.

The day was a great success with supporters roaring on our participants to get them through the course and over the line – followed by some celebrations in the event village at Tweed Green.

The Flying Scotsman, Graeme Obree said: “I had a fantastic time out on the route today among some spectacular scenery; it was great to see so many like-minded cyclists taking part and be able to have a chat with them out on the road and back in the event village when we returned. Nothing compares to riding your bike in Scotland and I look forward to next year’s!”

More than eighty riders cycled for the event charity Tesco National Charity Partnership with British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK to raise awareness and funds as well as the Tesco Bank supported charities and riders' own charities.

The event is also supported by Shimano, Canondale Bikes, Event Scotland, Macdonald Resorts and Hotels, Scottish Borders Council, Endura, Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative and Scottish Cycling.

It may seem like a long time coming but next year’s event will be here before you know it. If you’re a cyclist, love the outdoors and enjoy a fun, family day out then this could be for you. For more information on the event and for details of how to take part please the Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders website http://tourotheborders.com/.
